MCM Picks: Memorial Day. Mint has annually issued the American Gold Eagle series since 1986. After thirty-five years of unchanged imagery, the Mint introduced the Type-2 style Gold Eagle in mid-2021. Released in early 2021, this American Gold Eagle proof coin is one of the final coins minted with the classic Type-1 imagery. This 2021-W American Gold Eagle coin contains 1 Troy oz. 9167 fine gold (22 karat). The coin represents the final West Point Mint proof release of the Type-1 variety Gold Eagle. The perfectly graded coin qualified for the prestigious First Strike designation. No more than 12,700 were minted. Obverse: Lady Liberty is rendered as a young woman in the obverse, walking forward while holding aloft an olive branch and a torch of enlightenment, with the distinctive dome of the U. Capitol Building and stylized rays of the sun in the background. The inscriptions “LIBERTY, ” “2021” and the Mint mark “W” accompany the image, along with a frame of fifty stars. This interpretation of Liberty first appeared on the 1907 Gold Double Eagle designed by acclaimed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Reverse: The reverse is adorned with the charming image of an eagle family in a nest, as a male flies overhead grasping a single olive branch.
