Each coin bears a mint mark, the largest the “W” of the West Point Mint and the three others the “P” of the Philadelphia Mint. Classic Double Eagle Design of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The same designs appear on all four of the coins in this set. The obverse image is the iconic Saint-Gaudens. Liberty stands facing the holder with one foot set upon a rock and her long hair blowing in the wind. She holds her torch, a symbol of freedom, in front of her and an olive branch, a symbol of peace, off to her side. The rays of the morning sun spread out behind her, making her appear a larger than life figure. The Capitol Dome, which is rendered in miniature on the left, adds to this effect. The original design had forty-six stars along the rim representing the states at the time. The number of stars on this image has been adapted to reflect the current number of states. Obverse inscriptions include “LIBERTY, ” which is at the top, and “1990, ” which is set off to the right. The reverse features the design of Miley Busiek. It is divided into two parts, the top, which is a male eagle carrying an olive branch, and the bottom, his family awaiting his return in their nest. “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” are inscribed between these two parts.
