The American Gold Eagle series began in 1986 and has since emerged as the world’s favorite gold bullion coin. That rich tradition continues with this exquisite 2019 edition. The patriotic design is enhanced by the fact that this coin was struck at the West Point Mint, just a short distance from the United States Military Academy. The coin was struck on a one ounce planchet of. Patriotic Saint-Gaudens Design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The obverse design for this series comes from the double eagle of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The design was his masterpiece and takes its name from him. Liberty stands powerfully at the center facing the holder. She has her left foot elevated upon a rock as a strong wind blows her hair and her garment. In front of her, she holds her torch, a beacon for freedom lovers around the world. To her side, she extends an olive branch, a universal symbol of peace. The rays of the rising sun in the background combine with a miniature Capitol Dome on the left to make the figure appear larger than life. On the rim are fifty stars, four more than on the original, that encircle the image. The reverse design of Miley Busiek features a family of eagles. The mother eagle nestles her young in the nest as she watches her mate return with an olive branch.
