2008 Buffalo Gold coins. Up until 2008 the only offerings from the US Mint in Buffalo Gold coins were 1 troy ounce coins. 2008 changed the playing field for the Buffalo Gold coins. By popular demand, the Mint began striking both versions of the issue in four different sizes, much like the Gold Eagles. Additionally, also like Gold Eagles, the Mint introduced Gold Buffalo coins in a burnished finish, also in four different sizes. Join all that with the one ounce bullion version coin, and there were now a total of nine different Buffalo Gold coin issues. While the public got what they wanted, purchasing was widely distributed between the different issues, leaving each issue with a much lower mintage than had been previously experienced, for those issues that had previous mintage figures to compare. Initially considered to be a good thing, now collectors look back among all the 1 oz. Issues, and find that the 2008 issue is harder to find than others in that part of the series. 2008 Buffalo Gold design. The 2008 design of the Gold Buffalo follows the same classic theme as earlier (and later) Gold Buffalo issues. The design is a close rendition of the original James Earle Fraser design used for the nickel in 1913. This original design had to be changed mid-year on the nickels because of a problem with the denomination sitting atop the relief and fears that even modest wear would wipe out the denomination ont he coins altogether. The Gold Buffalos do not have the same concern regarding wear, so the original’mound’ style reverse design was used for these coins. NGC MS70 – making the Grade. This coin is certified and graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) to be a perfect mint state 70 grade. This means that the coin has no visible flaws and is as-struck at the United States Mint. Native American Head (modified Indian Head Nickel design).
